Sample - Word Study Lesson Plan / Weekly Routine (5 Days)
Day 1 – Introduce the Sort
Students cut apart their sort and practise with a partner.
Homework – Write sort in their word study notebooks.
Day 2 – Sort and Check
Students practise sort individually and with a partner.
Timed speed sort w/ a partner. Record times in Word Study Notebooks.
Homework – Write sentences with 2 words from each contrast/column.
Day 3 – Reflect / Compare and Declare
Word Hunt / Record words in Word Study Notebooks
Teacher explains / models Game/Activity for the sort
Homework – Write sentences with 2 additional words from each contrast / column. Practice sort
.
Day 4 – Extend
No Peeking Writing Sort (practice test w/ partner)
Students play Game / Activity for the sort.
Homework – Practise speed sort w/ an adult – 3 times and record times
Day 5 – Sort & Check / Reflect / Assess
Beat the Teacher Sort
Write a summary for the sort in Word Study Notebooks.
Spelling Test (Homework – Write sentences with any missed words.)
Another Sample Weekly Routine (5 days)
Monday
Students receive words to cut out and write their initials (or scribble on the back of the sheet).
Students will complete an “open sort”
Teacher introduces words, demonstrates sort in a small group.
Students explain why words are being sorted that way.
Students take their own words back to their seats and independently replicate the sort.
They will then write the sort in their word study notebooks.
Tuesday
Students re-sort words. They will pick 6 words to draw and label.
Wednesday
Students will sort words with a partner. They will check each other’s work and discuss any difficulties.
Thursday
Students sort words. They might have a speed sort against the teacher or with a classmate.
Students perform a word hunt using literature currently being read.
Friday
Review game or activity using words of the week.
